Canadian Legal System

by

It’s a sad commentary that in a country which is considered to be among the best in the world by many standards, there are many thousands for whom any kind of meaningful legal recourse is mostly just an illusion.

In this blog post, a young lady’s struggle to get some assistance with a landlord/tenant issue. Some of what she’s written (“my rights in tenant law, and the human rights code do NOT exist if no one steps forward to help me… as much as I am supposed to have rights and protection- that is illusary when no one helps support that when a vulnerable person needs it.”) relects the kind of pretend society that we’re allowing our politicians to fashion for us.

And this excellent newspaper article (“Taking your own counsel”; Tracey Tyler; Toronto Star; 2007/03/07) which quotes Canada’s Chief Justice, Beverley McLachlin as saying that “the numbers are becoming alarming.”
