Rising Food Prices Silently Attack the Poor

The price of milk, eggs and other essentials in the American diet rose by double digits for the 12 months ending in July.

Although these numbers are critically important to society’s poorest members, they too often get lost in the broader inflation rate for all goods and services. For example, during the 12-month period just cited, the alarming spike in food prices “were offset by falling prices for things bought at the mall: computers, cameras, clothing and shoes.” Those purchases by more affluant citizens caused the broader inflation rate for all goods and services (and the one most usually publicized) to come in at 2.4%.
