photoIs there any rule that says public art can’t also be functional as well? If not, then London might want to reconsider the garish metal trees that it’s deployed throughout the core area.

Over in Vienna, Austria they’re field-testing designer trees that are actually solar-powered lights that should slash utility costs and cut down on carbon emissions.

photoSporting 36 solar cells on each of the 10 solar lamps on it’s branches, a solar tree also employs rechargeable batteries and a sensor that auto-triggers the lamps on/off.

Reportedly, the solar trees provided sufficient light from dusk to dawn, even when the sun went missing for four days in a row.
