Commuter Challenge is a national program that encourages Canadians to walk, cycle, take transit, carpool or tele-work instead of driving alone to work. The Challenge supports workplaces as they encourage their employees to leave their cars at home for their personal health, the health of their communities and the health of the environment. Individual Canadians can participate too.” 01

Members of London City Council:

For this year’s commuter challenge (June 1-8), I’ve decided to put all of you to the test. It’s an attempt to gauge your personal willingness to adapt your own lifestyles in the spirit of the Transportation Master Plan which advocates alternative transportation.

I’m asking that each of you agree to not drive AT ALL, and FOR THE ENTIRE WEEK of June 1-8. Making excuses for hopping in your car when an inconvenience threshold is reached defeats the purpose, don’t you think?

If you’d like to keep detailed logs of your experiences, I suggest that it may help you to draw better conclusion at the end of the week. And I’d personally like each of you to at least keep a log of your public transit trips (inc. waiting/travelling time). It could be a real eye-opener, especially if you have to execute transfers in order to reach your destinations. Naturally, the more trips you make, the more relevant will be the experience.

Kindly RSVP so that I can publish your responses before the end of the month.

Respectfully,

Greg Fowler.

I find it funny (well not funny, but you know what I mean) that the people who make all of the important decisions involving public transit have probably never taken the bus a day in their life. But I shouldnt really be surprised by this, I mean thats the way things operate around the world, people making decision for others based on the perceived best interest of the general public, when in fact they have little to no idea of what they are talking about.
