Trying to wrap my head around a story I just came across about”an Abbotsford family with 17 children — and another on the way.” 01

I understand that in ‘olden days’ it was not unusual for families to have lots of children. Sometimes, they even had the ability to feed them all. I seem to recall that Queen Anne had 17.

But in this day and age, is it really smart? Is it irresponsible?

Despite “be fruitful and multiply” entreaties by His Holiness, even Catholics don’t propogate like bunnies any more the way that we used to.

Strangely enough, another story in a different newspaper which says that Abbotsford has told Peace Lutheran Church “to stop feeding a group of homeless people [who are claimed to be] frightening residents of a seniors’ home” and that the city also claims that “the free food is also drawing in drug dealers and addicts [who are] congregating on the front steps” [of the aforementioned senior’s home]. 02

So, is it possible that it’s the addicts and drug dealers who are scaring the seniors?

In any event, if you’re going to sire 17 children, shouldn’t you guard against the possibility of being out of work by at least making sure that you’re living in a city that has a social safety net?
