Hieronymus (Harry) Bosch–former hero cop bumped from the L.A. homicide desk to the lowly Beverly Hills squad–gets the call on a drug death at Mulholland Dam. Harry recognizes the corpse as that of a fellow soldier in Vietnam; both were “tunnel rats” who searched for Viet Cong in the network of burrows beneath Vietnamese villages. Investigation connects his old pal to an unsolved bank job–the vault was tunneled into from the storm drains below–and Harry takes his information to the FBI. The Bureau alerts the LAPD, which reactivates internal affairs surveillance (the previous IAD episode is explained throughout the narrative), only to have the FBI backtrack and request Harry as liaison on the case. Paired with beautiful FBI agent Eleanor Wish, Harry makes sense of the Vietnam connection to the bank job–a discovery that puts them both in danger from deadly ex-Marines and a powerful insider from either the LAPD or the FBI itself.

Make Our City a Global Hotspot

March 18, 2008

The message is essentially the same as the one that I conveyed to you yesterday, just a bit more poetically: “It is integral to the dignity of mankind that one must be able to read his or her emails in a public place.” 01

Well, actually there’s another message contained in the post, but it’ll require checking it out a bit more; ie, that the other London on the banks of the other Thames River has now become the WiFi capital of the world.

It’s a missed opportunity I tell you! Think of all the hotspots that could be created with all the Ambassador London cash that being scammed out of City Hall . Think of all the feet on the street, stopping for a moment’s relaxation and a quick blog post about our communitiy’s walkability, a sure-fire affordable visitor magnet if ever there was one.

Now think of all the millions of taxpayer dollars that Dave Leckie wants to spend treating cracks in our ever-expanding road system.

Dana Evans is a spunky, good-looking, young Washington TV journalist who’s recently returned to the nation’s capital from the Balkans, where she adopted a handicapped war orphan who’s having trouble adjusting to life in America. But that doesn’t keep Dana from following a story all over the world, from Washington to Aspen, Nice, Juneau, Dusseldorf, Rome, Brussels, Moscow, and Siberia. Each of these brief visits is like a postcard–a local landmark or two, an interesting local restaurant (at least in the European venues), and another piece of the puzzle, which has to do with why every member of a venerable, old Washington dynasty has died a violent death in the last year. It seems strange that in a media-savvy city like Washington, no one but Dana has noticed there’s a pattern in the rapid extinction of the Winthrops or even whispered the words family vendetta. But that’s why pretty, young girl TV reporters were invented…

The Ambassador London Debate

December 18, 2007

I was a bit late tuning into the City Council meeting on Rogers13 last evening, and there was already a bit of a dustup in progress. Seems like London’s new Ambassador Program wants about $30,000 in ‘interim financing’ but didn’t present much financial information, and at least a few of those around the ‘shoe balked at taking a flyer. Which it seems to me, is as it should be.

So why did a motion to defer voting on the $30,000 until after the group presented Council with a business plan get defeated? Even more alarmingly to me, the fact that Council approved the request, and it wasn’t even a close vote!
