Dana Evans is a spunky, good-looking, young Washington TV journalist who’s recently returned to the nation’s capital from the Balkans, where she adopted a handicapped war orphan who’s having trouble adjusting to life in America. But that doesn’t keep Dana from following a story all over the world, from Washington to Aspen, Nice, Juneau, Dusseldorf, Rome, Brussels, Moscow, and Siberia. Each of these brief visits is like a postcard–a local landmark or two, an interesting local restaurant (at least in the European venues), and another piece of the puzzle, which has to do with why every member of a venerable, old Washington dynasty has died a violent death in the last year. It seems strange that in a media-savvy city like Washington, no one but Dana has noticed there’s a pattern in the rapid extinction of the Winthrops or even whispered the words family vendetta. But that’s why pretty, young girl TV reporters were invented…

Generations in the future, when humanity has spread to other planets and Earth is ruled by Sanctity, a dour, coercive religion that looks to resurrection of the body by storing cell samples of its communicants, a plague is threatening to wipe out mankind. The only planet that seems to be spared is Grass, so-called because that is virtually all that grows there. It was settled by families of European nobility who live on vast estancias and indulge in the ancient sport of fox hunting–although the horses, hounds and foxes aren’t what they what they appear to be.

Does This Make Sense to You?

March 4, 2008

Following the Harper government’ federal budget last month, which included a $500,000 cut to the Library and Archives Canada budget, todays announcement that the national Book Exchange Centre will be closed.

“Opened 35 years ago, the exchange centre is a massive swap shop for public and academic libraries across Canada. Libraries donate books and periodicals their patrons no longer use and, in response to requests by other libraries, the centre redistributes them.” 01

“Those close to the matter said the usefulness of the service can be seen in the more than 500,000 publications distributed to member libraries across the country last year. While the main clients of the CBEC were Canadian libraries, it has also sent boxes of books around the world through partnerships with underdeveloped countries.”  02

The concept on which this medical thriller is based is…the use of the latest biogenetic technology to spread deadly diseases in order to make a fortune curing them…At the end of World War II, Army officers Webb and Parker make a deal with the sinister but brilliant Dr. Ran, head of an infamous Japanese institute that uses prisoners as guinea pigs in a germ-warfare program: their silence about his crimes for his scientific cooperation. Forty-five years later, Ran is chief researcher for Webb’s giant pharmaceutical company, Parker is the U.S. Army’s surgeon general, and the stage is set for a potentially genocidal project masquerading as part of the army’s antigerm-warfare plans. Meanwhile, a Washington epidemiologist discovers several mysterious cases of bubonic plague and, though possibly infected himself, embarks on a race against time to avert a national catastrophe.
