“Brother William of Baskerville is sent to investigate a wealthy Italian abbey whose monks are suspected of heresy. When his mission is overshadowed by seven bizarre deaths patterned on the book of Revelation, Brother William turns detective, following the trail of a conspiracy that brings him face-to-face with the abbey’s labyrinthine secrets, the subversive effects of laughter, and the medieval Inquisition. Caught in a power struggle between the emperor he serves and the pope who rules the Church, Brother William comes to see that what is at stake is larger than any mere political dispute–that his investigation is being blocked by those who fear imagination, curiosity, and the power of ideas.”

Hieronymus (Harry) Bosch–former hero cop bumped from the L.A. homicide desk to the lowly Beverly Hills squad–gets the call on a drug death at Mulholland Dam. Harry recognizes the corpse as that of a fellow soldier in Vietnam; both were “tunnel rats” who searched for Viet Cong in the network of burrows beneath Vietnamese villages. Investigation connects his old pal to an unsolved bank job–the vault was tunneled into from the storm drains below–and Harry takes his information to the FBI. The Bureau alerts the LAPD, which reactivates internal affairs surveillance (the previous IAD episode is explained throughout the narrative), only to have the FBI backtrack and request Harry as liaison on the case. Paired with beautiful FBI agent Eleanor Wish, Harry makes sense of the Vietnam connection to the bank job–a discovery that puts them both in danger from deadly ex-Marines and a powerful insider from either the LAPD or the FBI itself.

Generations in the future, when humanity has spread to other planets and Earth is ruled by Sanctity, a dour, coercive religion that looks to resurrection of the body by storing cell samples of its communicants, a plague is threatening to wipe out mankind. The only planet that seems to be spared is Grass, so-called because that is virtually all that grows there. It was settled by families of European nobility who live on vast estancias and indulge in the ancient sport of fox hunting–although the horses, hounds and foxes aren’t what they what they appear to be.

In today’s high-tech world of computers, lasers, and biotechnology, it was inevitable that something somewhere would go wrong. A custodian’s error has sent a deadly, mutating plague across the globe. And it’s travelling so fast that the civilized world can do nothing to stop it. Isolated in the tropical rainforests of South America, researchers doing genetic experiments on monkeys find startling success. Something is making the macaques evolve faster…

Does This Make Sense to You?

March 4, 2008

Following the Harper government’ federal budget last month, which included a $500,000 cut to the Library and Archives Canada budget, todays announcement that the national Book Exchange Centre will be closed.

“Opened 35 years ago, the exchange centre is a massive swap shop for public and academic libraries across Canada. Libraries donate books and periodicals their patrons no longer use and, in response to requests by other libraries, the centre redistributes them.” 01

“Those close to the matter said the usefulness of the service can be seen in the more than 500,000 publications distributed to member libraries across the country last year. While the main clients of the CBEC were Canadian libraries, it has also sent boxes of books around the world through partnerships with underdeveloped countries.”  02
